OVERVIEW

According to data from the ISMP National Medication Error Reporting Program (ISMP MERP), opioids are still among the most frequent high-alert medications to cause patient harm. A number of knowledge gaps exist among physicians, nurses, and pharmacists regarding dosing, the safest workflow with automated dispensing systems, and the accreditation standards and regulatory requirements for medication use. Anesthesia providers are in a key position to support improved understanding of the risks associated with the use of opioids. During this symposium, national experts will discuss current opioid medication safety challenges and the potential leadership role for anesthesiologists in error prevention.

OBJECTIVES

The target audience for this activity includes anesthesiologists in health care settings. At the completion of this symposium, the participant will be able to:
  • Identify system-based causes of medication errors associated with the use of opioid medications.
  • Describe methods to identify risk associated with the use of opioids in operative and procedural settings.
  • Prioritize strategies and actions to prevent harm and improve opioid therapy for effective pain management.
  • Describe the role and benefit of the anesthesiologist in improving the safety associated with the use of opioid therapy.
